Lych Gate Restoration Appeal
In 2026 we plan to complete our project of renovating our Grade II listed Lych gate

Appeal began in 2017

In 2017 we began our plans to restore the lych gate by collecting 5ps. Over the years we have collected many 5ps.
Last year our appeal step up a gear and in 2025 we raised towards the restoration project believed to be £10,000.

History

The lych gate was erected in 1880 to the memory of the first vicar of the parish, Rev Alfred Clifton.
It once had seats but in the 1920s School Road was raised by 14 inches and the flooring had to be brought up to the level of the footpath. The pathway leading to the Church had also to be lifted and paved.
It has appeared in many photographs of those who have passed through it to atten baptisms, weddings and funerals. Many thousands more must have entered the churchyard by this route.

Inscriptions

A lychgate (from Old English līc, corpse) or resurrection gate is a covered gateway found at the entrance to a traditional English or English-style churchyard.

Inscriptions inside the lych gate:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF ALFRED CLIFTON M.A. FIRST VICAR OF YARDLEY WOOD THIS GATE IS PLACED HERE BY HIS PEOPLE AND FRIENDS A.D.1880

WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT, ENTER THOU INTO THE JOY OF THE LORD

Blessed are those servants whom the Lord when he cometh shall find waiting.

Restoration Appeal

For many our lychgate is a symbol of our church. The local secondary school adopted the image of our lychgate in its logo.
But the lychgate has warn sandstone blocks and the wood is cracked. It needs restoration, which we are told will cost £10,000.
If you are able to help donate to our appeal. Feel free to donate your 5ps, or make a donation by
